Corrimal Leagues Club has a proud history spanning well over 50 years. Since opening at its present site, the Club has been committed to bringing excellence in dining and entertainment to Corrimal.
The basis of the formation of the Leagues Club began with a group of Sunday morning drinkers, mainly supporters and football officials who met in a corrugated tin shed at the Coke Works on Sunday mornings. As numbers grew, that shifted to Ziems Park dressing shed, which was constructed from a timber hardwood frame, corrugated walls and roof with a dirt floor.
In the early 1950’s, meetings were held at Bellambi Hotel, The Friendly Society Hall or Don Thackarays. The Leagues Club Steering Committee was formulated from Rugby League, Soccer, Cricket, Tennis and Surf Clubs. Arthur Ziems, Alf Ramsay, Jack Cartwright, Gus Hendricks, Len Heath, Oscar Dare, Tom Fryer, Snow Williams, Ron Hamilton (who become the first Secretary Manager) and Wal Musgrove (who donated the block of land on which the Club now stands), made up the committee. They started a bank account with the Rural Bank in Wollongong and plans were drawn up by Oscar Dare for the Club. Plans were submitted to the Bank and an application for a Liquor License was granted (conditional), meaning the Club could only buy from another Club or Hotel.
Tenders were called for the building and local builder Artie Robinson was successful. All local sub contractors were used and any material and labour donated were accepted. On the 14th October 1954, the Club officially opened for trading at 3.30 in the afternoon.
After two years of trading, an Architect was appointed to design a concrete and brick building. The building had a small foyer and office at the front and a billiard room at the side. A bar and snack bar was also erected with a library attached and a loading dock at the rear. More recently, the entrance to the club was moved to the rear which has enabled easier access from the car park which has proved to be effective.
As a result of the Governments decision to restrict and eventually ban smoking in licensed premises, the Club recently incorporated a covered outdoor terrace and entertainment facility in what was the B.B.Q area. This is ideal for all sorts of functions, from 21st Birthdays and Engagement Parties; as well as a great spot for sporting bodies and families to congregate after their game. This area also provides an excellent Al Fresco Dining area and smoking facility for our members throughout the day and night.
In this new millennium, Corrimal Leagues Club is just as committed as it was in its early days to giving its members and guests access to quality service and a first-rate venue.
We thank you for your support and loyalty over the years and we look forward to your continued patronage as we move forward into the new millennium.
